AI Anime Character Creator: Design Your Own OC in 2026
Search for an anime character creator and you get two completely different product categories wearing the same name. On one side are the classic dress-up makers - Picrew, Charat, Avachara - where you click together a character from parts an artist drew by hand. On the other side is a newer wave of AI tools that render a character from a text description. Both are called character creators. They produce very different things.
We run goongen.ai, one of the AI tools in that second category, so keep that bias in mind. But we have spent real time with the dress-up makers too, and honestly, they are great at what they do. This guide covers both approaches fairly, then shows where the AI path takes over - when you want your OC in any pose, outfit, or scene instead of the one an artist pre-drew.
The Two Approaches
A preset part-picker gives you a canvas and a menu of hand-drawn layers: hair, eyes, outfit, accessories, background. Every option was drawn by a human artist to fit one base pose and one art style. You mix and match, and the result always looks clean because every combination was designed to work.
An AI character creator renders the character from scratch based on what you describe. There are no preset parts - the model draws hair, outfit, pose, and scene on demand. That means infinite variation, but also less predictability: two generations of the same description will differ in the details.

The Classic Dress-Up Makers
Picrew
Picrew is the giant of the category. Launched in 2018 by the Japanese company TetraChroma, it hosts over 10,000 "image makers" - each one a self-contained character creator drawn by an individual artist. You pick a maker whose style you like, then click through layered options for hair, eyes, clothes, and accessories.
The charm is that everything is human-drawn. A good Picrew maker has personality that AI output often lacks, and browsing makers is half the fun. The limits are structural: your OC exists in exactly one pose, one expression range, and one art style - whatever the maker's artist drew. Each maker also carries its own artist-set usage rules, so check before using an avatar as anything more than a profile picture.
Charat
Charat is a Japanese browser-based maker with several house styles (Genesis, Origin, and a few chibi variants), all free and playable without an install. Unlike face-only avatar makers it does full-body characters, and there is a random button when you want the tool to surprise you. Fewer styles than Picrew, but more polished and consistent since everything comes from one team.
Avachara
Avachara is the simplest of the three: click parts, build a full-body anime-style avatar, snapshot it. It is free for personal use (commercial use requires a license) and takes about five minutes to master. Great for a quick profile picture, limited for serious OC design.
All three are genuinely good at the portrait use case. Where they stop is the moment you want your character doing something - a new pose, a new outfit, a scene. The part list is the ceiling.
The AI Wave
ocmaker.ai
ocmaker.ai is a purpose-built AI OC generator: you fill in structured fields describing your character (or write free text), pick from preset art styles, and it renders the design. As of this writing it runs a freemium model - a small monthly credit allowance free, paid plans on top. One caveat when searching for it: there are several near-identical "OC Maker" sites on different domains, so make sure you are on the one you intend to be.
The relevant policy note: ocmaker.ai's terms prohibit NSFW content outright - no nudity, no explicit material, no exceptions. If your OC design is strictly SFW, that will not matter. If it is not, this is the wrong tool, full stop.
Komiko
Komiko (komiko.app) is more ambitious - an OC maker inside a full creative studio, with AI comic panels, illustration generation, and animation tools for turning stills into short clips. It allows adult content for original fictional characters behind an 18+ gate, which makes it one of the few mainstream-polished tools that does.
The tradeoff is that it is a cloud platform with accounts, and that cut the other way in early 2026: a widely reported data breach exposed over a million Komiko user records, including generated content and the prompts used to create it, mapped to email addresses. The breach is listed on Have I Been Pwned. We are not pointing at this to gloat - any platform can be breached - but it is exactly the scenario that made us build goongen the way we did: if the server stores your generations in plaintext next to your email, a breach exposes both.

Two policy points, stated plainly. goongen is an 18+ tool for fictional characters only - adult, adult-presenting characters, no real people, ever. The Bottom Line
There is no single best anime character creator - there are two tools for two jobs. Dress-up makers are the better craft experience for a one-off portrait, and they are free; nothing an AI produces has quite the charm of a well-made Picrew. But the moment your OC needs to exist beyond one pre-drawn pose, only the AI approach scales, and then the real differences are policy and privacy: what the tool lets you make, and who can see what you made.
