"AI chat no filter" is one of the most searched phrases in the whole character chat space, and almost every result is selling a different thing under the same label. One app means "no keyword blocklist". Another means "the model will not refuse". A third means "we do not moderate", which is never true. If you have paid for an unfiltered chat and still hit a wall on message twenty, this is why.

This article sorts out what a filter actually is, what "no filter" can honestly mean, what stays off-limits everywhere and why, and what an unfiltered chat quietly costs you. It does not cover bypasses or jailbreaks: they break every platform's terms, they get accounts banned, and they stop working every few weeks. We build an unfiltered chat ourselves, so the last section is biased and says so.

The Three Things a Filter Can Be

Filtering happens in three places, and a product can have any combination.

1. A keyword or classifier filter in front of the model

Your message is scanned before the model sees it, or the reply is scanned before you do. Certain words or an automated classifier trigger a block, a blur, or a rewritten reply. This is the cheapest kind and the most visible: it produces the "message could not be sent" experience and the "swimsuit is fine, underwear is blocked" inconsistency we have seen in image tools for years. Keyword games can get around it, which is exactly why it keeps getting tightened.

2. A model trained to refuse

No filter in front; the model itself was tuned to decline and, worse for roleplay, to step out of character and say so. This is the Character.AI experience: the bot stops being your character and becomes a content policy in the middle of a scene. There is nothing to bypass because the behaviour is in the weights. We covered why that design follows from Character.AI's position in our Character AI alternative guide, and the 2025-26 changes - open-ended chat removed for under-18s, a stricter intent-based filter for everyone else - moved it further in that direction, not back.

3. Platform moderation

Nothing touches the message in real time, but conversations are logged, flagged and reviewed by automated systems and, when flagged, by people. This is the one every platform has, including the ones that call themselves uncensored, because a platform that can be held responsible for content has to be able to look at it.

"No filter" honestly means the absence of 1 and 2. It never means the absence of 3, and any product implying otherwise is describing its marketing rather than its architecture.

What Is Off-Limits Everywhere, and Why That Is Not a Filter

Every serious platform, filtered or not, has two hard lines: nothing involving minors, and no non-consensual sexual material involving real people. Those are not content policy in the "we prefer you did not" sense; they are the law in most jurisdictions where these services operate, and a platform that ignored them would not exist for long.

That matters for expectations. An "AI chat no filter" that still refuses those two things is not lying to you. One that refuses a consenting adult scene between two fictional characters is filtered, whatever the landing page says.

The Hidden Cost: Moderation Requires Reading

Here is the part that never makes the feature list. Filter type 3 - the one nobody can drop - only works if something on the server can read your conversation. Automated moderation reads it. Human review of flagged chats reads it. And "we may review conversations for safety, abuse and legal reasons" is in the privacy policy of essentially every character platform, from the strictest to the most permissive.

So the unfiltered platforms and the filtered ones share a property: your most personal writing sits readable on someone else's server. The unfiltered ones simply promise not to act on most of it. Some go further and use your conversations to train their models by default - CrushOn does, with an opt-out buried in settings - which is a different thing from moderation but comes from the same access.

The only structural way out is for the operator not to be able to read the conversation at all: encrypted in your browser before it is stored, opened only by your password. That removes the ability to moderate what is saved, which is why almost nobody does it, and why the ones who do have to be explicit that the legal hard lines are enforced at generation time rather than by reading your archive.

The 2026 Twist: Age Verification

Unfiltered chat used to mean "an account and a checkbox". In 2025 and 2026 that changed. SpicyChat introduced verification with a video selfie or an ID in the UK first and has since extended it to several countries and a growing list of US states; Janitor AI added third-party age checks in Australia, Brazil and the UK; Character.AI built in-house age assurance and removed open-ended chat for teens entirely. Unverified users on the platforms that verify get a safe-mode experience.

The practical effect: "no filter" increasingly means "no filter once you have shown someone your face or your ID". For a lot of people that is fine. For the ones who came to unfiltered chat precisely because they did not want their identity attached to it, it is the whole question, and it is worth knowing before you sign up rather than after you have written 300 messages.

What "Free NSFW AI Chat" Usually Means

Free tiers on the unfiltered platforms are real but capped, and the caps moved in 2026:

  • CrushOn AI: 50 messages a day with ads on the free tier since April 2026, down from a monthly allowance; images are paid-only.
  • SpicyChat: 100 messages a day, short replies, a small context window, ads and queues at peak - the good models sit behind the $15 and $25 tiers.
  • Janitor AI: free with its own model, which is queued and throttled at peak; the replies people rave about come from an external model you connect and pay for separately.
  • Perchance: genuinely free and uncapped with no account, with a small image generator, and your chats live in your browser's local storage - which is private until you clear your cache and lose them.

None of that is dishonest. It is just worth reading before planning an evening around "free".

How to Check Any "No Filter" Claim in Five Minutes

  1. Read the content policy, not the landing page. Look for the two hard lines and nothing else. Extra lines mean a filter.
  2. Ask a consenting adult scene early. If the reply steps out of character to decline, the model is refusal-trained. Type 2, no bypass possible.
  3. Find the moderation and training clauses in the privacy policy. "May review", "may use to improve our models". Decide whether that is acceptable to you.
  4. Check the age-verification page. Video selfie, ID, third-party check, or none. Know which before you write anything personal.
  5. Check the free-tier caps in the pricing page's fine print, not the headline.

Where We Fit

We are the team behind goongen.ai, so treat this section with the appropriate suspicion.

Our roleplay chat is in build and not open yet; the AI roleplay page shows what it will be and collects interest. What is live today is the image side: 1,400+ anime characters in our catalog, each drawn by her own trained model, with no keyword blocklists and no refusals for legal content.

The chat is being built on the same rule. No keyword filter in front of the model, no model that breaks character to lecture you, and exactly two hard lines - nothing involving minors, no non-consensual material involving real people - which are in our acceptable use policy and nowhere else. Every character runs on a card built from canon, so the refusal you get from Makima is Makima's, not a policy's.

And we handle the reading problem structurally instead of by promise. Everything you write is locked so only your password opens it; we never see the password, because the login checks it without it leaving your device. We could not review your conversations if we wanted to. You are the customer rather than the product: there are no ads and nothing to mine, and your credits pay for GPU time and nothing else.

Chat will be free. Only photos cost credits - 5 per delivered image, refunded if it fails to render - with packs from $0.99, crypto only, no subscription, no API key of your own.

The honest tradeoffs:

  • Not shipped. Chat is being added and checked character by character before it opens.
  • No age verification means no identity on file with us - and also no way for us to recover an account. Forget your password and lose the backup file, and your stories are gone.
  • Crypto only. Bitcoin and stablecoins.
  • Anime characters first. Realistic and custom characters come later.

Closing

"AI chat no filter" is three claims wearing one label. Ask which filter is missing: the keyword scanner, the refusal-trained model, or the moderation that requires reading your chats. The first two can honestly be absent. The third can only be absent if the operator cannot read what you saved.

Our Character AI alternative guide covers the current unfiltered options in detail, and the AI roleplay page is where the version we are building lives. If you want to see the unfiltered image side today, the anime demo gives every account 5 free images, no card and no ID.
