Grok Imagine spent its first year as the free, fast image generator baked into X and grok.com. Then 2026 happened. The Short Answer
No. As of this writing, a free X or grok.com account still gets you Grok text chat, but zero image and video generations. The Imagine tab often still shows up in the UI - you hit the paywall the moment you press generate. Image and video generation now require X Premium, X Premium+, or a SuperGrok subscription.

How the Free Tier Disappeared: A 2026 Timeline
Through late 2025: Grok Imagine was heavily promoted as free "for a limited time." Free accounts got a real daily allowance of images and even short video clips. This is the era most "Grok Imagine is free" articles were written in, which is why so much advice online is now stale.
January 9, 2026: The first cut. Following widely reported misuse incidents and the resulting backlash, xAI restricted generation for free users and tightened the content filters across the board. March 19, 2026: The free tier was removed entirely. Multiple outlets reported that xAI confirmed Grok Imagine is now a paid feature, with generation locked to X Premium, X Premium+, and SuperGrok subscribers. An xAI employee reportedly described the paid-only policy as a "near-term" measure driven by user growth - with no timeline for reversal. As of this writing, more than four months later, it has not been reversed.
Since March: Even paid subscribers report tightened quotas and throttling during peak hours. Tech press coverage described a wave of user frustration over quotas being cut with zero notice, including for paying users.
What Each Tier Gets
xAI does not publish official per-tier generation limits, so treat the access column below as directional and the caps as user-reported. Prices are as of this writing and change often - confirm on xAI's or X's own pages before paying.

How high are the caps? Nobody outside xAI knows for sure. User reports range from roughly 20 images a day on the cheaper tiers to 50-100 generations before soft limits kick in on SuperGrok, with a fair-use system that throttles heavy users at peak times. Some users also report that failed generations count against the quota. None of this is officially documented, which is itself part of the problem: you are buying a subscription without knowing what you actually get per day.
Is Grok Image Editing Still Free?
This one gets asked a lot, so directly: no, not on xAI's own apps. Editing an uploaded photo runs through the same Imagine pipeline as text-to-image generation, so since March 19 it sits behind the same subscription gate. A free account cannot generate and cannot edit.
You will find third-party websites offering "free Grok Imagine" editing or generation. Those are resellers wrapping the xAI API with their own free trials - which means your images pass through a middleman on top of xAI, usually with their own accounts, their own logging, and their own limits. That is not xAI's free tier coming back; it is a different product with extra steps.
As of this writing there is no indication that free image editing is returning to Grok itself.
The Catch Even If You Pay
Paying removes the paywall, not the other frustrations:
- The caps stay. A subscription buys you a quota, not unlimited generation, and the quota is undocumented and adjusted silently.

- The policy is volatile. Grok Imagine changed its access model twice in three months this year, both times with little or no notice. Whatever the rules are today, there is no guarantee they hold next quarter.
None of this makes Grok Imagine a bad model - it is genuinely fast and good at photorealism. It makes it an ordinary subscription product, which is not what most people searching "is Grok Imagine free" are hoping to find.
