Thousands of people search "Character AI no filter" every month, and every month the answer is the same: it does not exist, it is not coming, and the last two years moved it further away. If you are here for the workaround, this is not that article - bypasses break the terms, get accounts banned, and stop working within weeks. If you are here because the character you spent an evening with stepped out of the scene to lecture you, keep reading. There is a real answer, it is just not on Character.AI.

We build a competing chat, so the last section is biased and says so.

What Actually Changed in 2025 and 2026

The filter people remember from 2023 was a blocklist you could argue with. What exists now is different, and it is worth being precise:

  • The model itself declines. Character.AI's refusal behaviour is trained into the model rather than bolted in front of it. That is why rephrasing buys less ground every year: there is nothing to route around.
  • The filter got stricter, not looser. Through 2025 and into 2026 the platform moved to an intent-based system that catches implication rather than words. Reviews and user reports agree it is tighter than the 2024 version.
  • Open-ended chat was removed for under-18s. Announced in October 2025 and completed by late November 2025, with in-house age assurance rolled out to sort accounts. Teens get story and video features, not free chat.
  • Age verification unlocks open-ended chat, not explicit content. Verifying as an adult gets you the normal product. There is no adult mode behind it.
  • The lawsuits settled. In January 2026 Character.AI and Google agreed to settle a group of suits brought by families of teenagers, on confidential terms.

Put those together and the direction is unambiguous. A platform that has just settled cases about its effect on minors, built age assurance, and tuned refusals into the weights is not going to add a no-filter toggle. The people asking for one are asking the wrong company.

Why It Will Not Be Removed

Three structural reasons, none of them about prudishness.

Scale and liability. Tens of millions of users make every edge case a headline. The cheapest response is a model that refuses broadly rather than judges carefully.

App stores. Character.AI ships iOS and Android apps. Both stores enforce sexual-content rules on what they distribute, and a chat product with store apps inherits the ceiling. This is why companion apps converge on the same restrictions regardless of what their web users want.

Moderation requires reading. A platform that moderates conversations is a platform that reads conversations - its privacy policy says staff may review chats for safety, abuse and legal reasons, like every platform in the category. Once that is true, the incentive is to have less to review, which means a stricter model.

None of this is a criticism of Character.AI's product. The character library is enormous and the community is real. It is a description of why the filter is load-bearing for them.

What "NSFW Character AI" Searches Actually Want

Strip the brand name and the search means: a character who stays in the scene when it turns adult, with characters I recognise, without a lecture. That exists. It just involves leaving.

The honest options, as of September 2026:

Uncensored roleplay platforms. CrushOn AI (NSFW on by default on paid tiers, 50 free messages a day with ads), SpicyChat (100 free messages a day, better models from $15, keyword filters but no refusals) and Janitor AI (free with a queued house model, excellent with your own API key). All three run user-made character cards, which means "Makima" is whoever wrote her. All three store your chats readable on their servers; CrushOn uses them for training by default with an opt-out. And two of them now ask for age verification in a growing list of countries and US states - SpicyChat with a video selfie or ID, Janitor through a third-party check.

Run it yourself. SillyTavern with a local model is the gold standard: no filter except whatever the model learned, nothing leaves your machine. The cost is a GPU with real VRAM and an evening of setup. We covered it in our Character AI alternative guide.

Companion apps. Candy AI and the like are the smooth option with pictures included, on a subscription, with an account tied to your card and conversations stored readable. The companion is an original character, not one from a series.

The version we are building, below.

What "no filter" can and cannot mean across all of these - keyword scanners versus refusal-trained models versus moderation - is its own topic, and we wrote it up in AI chat with no filter.

The Part Nobody Mentions: The Character Is Not Her

Even on the uncensored platforms, the character you get is a user's paragraph in front of a shared model. It can be superb. It is usually "confident, playful, mysterious" - a mood that drifts into a helpdesk voice within fifteen turns, whatever the filter setting. Escaping Character.AI's refusal and landing on a bot with her name and none of her voice is a sideways move.

The thing to look for after the filter is a card that holds a real dialogue voice, the things she would never say, canon motives and flaws, and stories set in her world. Our AI character chat guide has a three-message test for it.

Where We Fit

We are the team behind goongen.ai, so treat this section accordingly.

Our Roleplay chat is in build and not open yet. The AI roleplay page shows what it will be and collects interest. If you need a chat this week, the options above are where to go.

What is being built is the thing the search actually wants:

  • No filter beyond two hard lines - nothing involving minors, no non-consensual material involving real people - and no model that breaks character to lecture you. The refusal you get from Makima is Makima's.
  • The actual character. Every one of the 1,400+ anime characters in our catalog runs on a card built from canon: dialogue voice, speech habits, what she avoids, motives, fears, flaws. Three stories written for her series, six open ones, and your own.
  • She sends photos inside the chat, drawn from her own reply by the model trained on her - the same model that draws her in the anime generator today.
  • No age verification, no identity on file. Which cuts both ways: we also cannot recover an account for you.

Each reply costs 1 credit; photos cost 5 credits per delivered image, refunded if they fail, packs from $0.99, crypto only, no subscription, no API key. Everything you write is locked so only your password opens it; we never see the password, because the login checks it without it leaving your device. We could not read your conversations if we wanted to, which is the structural version of "we do not moderate your archive". No ads, nothing mined - credits pay for GPU time, and that is the business.

The honest tradeoffs: not shipped; anime characters first; crypto only; lose your password and the backup file and your stories are gone.

Closing

Character AI with no filter is not a setting you have not found. It is a product decision made by a company that just settled lawsuits, built age assurance and trained refusals into its model - and it is not going to reverse. The question worth asking is not how to switch the filter off but where the character stays in the scene and still sounds like herself.

The Character AI alternative guide covers the options in depth. The AI roleplay page is where the version we are building lives, and the anime demo gives every account 5 free unfiltered images of the same characters today, no card and no ID.
