CrushOn AI did one thing better than the platforms it took users from: it stopped arguing with them. No refusal mid-scene, no character stepping out to lecture. For a lot of people that was the whole reason to switch, and it still is.

So if you are searching for a CrushOn AI alternative, it is probably not because of the filter. It is one of four other things: the free tier shrank, the images do not look like her, the fine print about your conversations, or the slow realisation that the character with the right name talks like every other bot on the site. This article covers all four, what the honest alternatives are, and where we fit. We build a competing chat, so the last section is biased and says so.

Everything below is from CrushOn's public pages and 2026 reviews as of September 2026. Its pricing page changes often and was not consistently reachable, so treat the numbers as approximate and check the current page.

What CrushOn Does Well

Be fair first.

  • NSFW is on, not tolerated. On paid tiers adult content is enabled by default with no keyword games, and the only hard lines are the legal ones - minors, real-person non-consent, a short list of extreme categories. That is the correct set.
  • The library is enormous. Hundreds of thousands of user-made characters, anime and realistic, so the name you want is almost certainly there.
  • No app store ceiling. It is web-first, which is exactly why it can allow what Talkie and PolyBuzz cannot.

If those are your priorities and the four points below do not bother you, you do not have a problem to solve.

Where It Falls Short

The free tier got small

In April 2026 the free allowance moved from a monthly pool to 50 messages a day, with ads. Fifty messages is a short evening. Paid tiers are priced by monthly message caps, starting at a few dollars and climbing to an unlimited tier around fifty; the exact figures differ between reviews, which tells you how often they move. It is not dishonest, it is just a subscription with a meter, and worth reading before planning around "free".

The pictures are of someone else

Images are paid-only, and they come from a general anime or realistic image model handed a description of the character. Reviews consistently describe the same thing: conversation-aware, but generic, with the face drifting between pictures. The model has never seen her; it has seen a lot of women with her hair colour. We explained why that happens and what the alternative looks like in AI chat that sends pictures.

Your chats are training data by default

CrushOn stores conversations indefinitely, and by default uses them to fine-tune its models. There is an opt-out in the settings, but it is opt-out, and it does not change that the chats sit readable on the server - independent reviewers could not confirm encryption at rest. For a platform whose entire audience came for privacy from a lecture, that is the fine print most worth reading.

The character is whoever wrote her

Like every user-card platform, "Makima" on CrushOn is a stranger's paragraph in front of a shared model. Some cards are superb. Most are a mood - "dominant, mysterious, cold" - that drifts into the same agreeable voice within fifteen turns, filter or no filter. Our AI character chat guide has a three-message test for it; most user cards fail on message two.

The Alternatives

Two notes on that table. SpicyChat and Janitor now require age verification in a growing list of countries and US states - a video selfie or ID on SpicyChat, a third-party check on Janitor - which is a different privacy trade from CrushOn's training clause but a trade all the same. And every option except the last two shares CrushOn's property that someone can read the conversation; we went into what "no filter" can and cannot mean in AI chat with no filter.

How to Pick

  • Same freedom, more free messages. SpicyChat, with clear eyes about the short replies and small context on the free tier.
  • Better replies and you are willing to wire up a model. Janitor AI with your own API key.
  • Nobody reads it, no matter what. SillyTavern on your own GPU, or Perchance if you can live with losing chats when you clear your cache.
  • Pictures that look like a person, any person. A companion app, on a subscription.
  • Pictures that look like her, and chats nobody can read. That is our half, below.

Where We Fit

We are the team behind goongen.ai, so this section is biased.

Our Roleplay chat is in build and not open yet. The AI roleplay page shows what it will look like and lets you register interest. If you need a CrushOn replacement this week, the table above is your answer.

What is being built takes CrushOn's correct decision - no filter beyond the legal lines, no lecture - and fixes the four things above:

  • The character is actually her. Every one of the 1,400+ anime characters in our catalog runs on a card built from canon: dialogue voice, speech habits, what she avoids, motives, fears, flaws. Three stories written for her series, six open ones, your own.
  • The pictures are her. She sends photos inside the chat, drawn from her own reply by the model trained on her - the same model that draws her in the anime generator today. Outfit, place and position carry between photos.
  • Pay per reply, without a daily meter. Each reply costs 1 credit - 100 replies for $0.99 - and each photo 5 per delivered image, refunded if it fails, packs from $0.99, crypto only, no subscription, no API key.
  • Nobody reads it, structurally. Everything you write is locked so only your password opens it; we never see the password, because the login checks it without it leaving your device. There is no training clause because there is nothing readable to train on. No ads, nothing mined - credits pay for GPU time and that is the business.

The honest tradeoffs: not shipped; anime characters first, realistic and custom ones later; crypto only; and if you lose your password and the backup file, your stories are gone - no identity on file means no recovery.

Closing

CrushOn got the filter right, and if that is all you need it is still a fine choice. The reasons to leave are the meter, the lookalike pictures, the training clause, and a character who has the name and not the voice.

The Character AI alternative guide covers the wider field. The AI roleplay page is where our version lives, and the anime demo gives every account 5 free images of the actual characters today, no card.
